Epsom Downs Racecourse is home of the Derby, one of the most famous horse races in the world, run on the Downs since the eighteenth century. On race days, especially the Derby Festival in early June, tens of thousands of people come to Epsom, and the roads over the Downs change completely. A pre-booked car with an agreed pickup point is the easiest way to get there, and the only reliable way to get home.
From the racecourse to central London, a saloon costs from £59.
Derby Festival
The Derby Festival takes place over a weekend in early June, with Ladies Day and Derby Day. Roads across the Downs are closed or one-way, and traffic is managed by the course and the police. Cars are booked up weeks ahead, so book as soon as you know your plans. Tell us:
- How many people are in your party
- Which enclosure or entrance you are going to
- A mobile number for the day
Getting home after the last race
When the last race finishes, thousands of people leave at the same time. Rather than queuing for a cab that may never come, book your car home in advance. On big race days the driver meets you at an agreed pickup point outside the restricted area, not at the entrance, because of road closures. We confirm the point before the day.
Groups and parties
Many racegoers travel in groups. One of our MPVs or larger vehicles can take the whole party, with up to 8 passengers in our biggest vehicles, so you arrive together and leave together. See our 8-seater minibus page.
Other race meetings and events
Epsom holds race meetings from spring to autumn, and the grandstand hosts conferences, exhibitions, weddings and parties throughout the year. Outside the Derby, roads are usually normal, and we can drop off and pick up at the grandstand entrance.
Coming from London or further away
We drive racegoers from central London, from hotels, and from the airports and stations. Arriving at Gatwick or Heathrow for the Derby? We can collect you at the airport and take you straight to the course.
